it was around lunchtime when we arrived at Tarragona, we parked the van at the edge of the city, left the boys and took the bikes to explore. We were pleasantly surprised with how lovely this little city is, a very pleasant old town, pretty Cathedral, old roman amphitheatre and nice pedestrian area similar to Las Ramblas in Barcelona (but on a much smaller scale!)
One end of the Pedestrian street is a large main fountain and the other end is the balcony looking out over the city and coast line in both directions. We really liked the life size sculpture of the Human tower that we came across, they have a festival of the real thing happening in Tarragona every year.
Our next stop 20 minutes North was the pretty town of Altafulla. We parked up on a beach car park and again taking the bikes to explore as we only had a few hours left of the day, we cycled all the way along the promenade as far as we could before taking to the beach. We wanted to check out the Castell de Tamarit and cycling along the beach seemed like the only option without a huge detour. It was fun but hard going in the sand, and we ended up getting a little wet as the tide was coming across the beach to fill a lagoon in one area. it was a really enjoyable few hours exploring the area by bike and looking down on the Tamarit once we had finally climbed the hill at the end of the beach.
